  • Virginia DGIF Confirms Hemorrhagic Disease Affecting Deer Populations

Many hunters in Virginia have heard about Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in deer, but not quite as many have heard about Hemorrhagic Disease. Even fewer hunters realize the state has some significant concerns regarding HD in Virginias whitetail deer populations right now. Hemorrhagic Disease (HD) is a virus that affects both domestic and wild hoofed animals, which is transmitted by being bitten by midges carrying the virus. • Copperheads Giving Birth in Virginia

Now is the time when hunters are clearing paths and setting stands for deer season, and hunters are anxiously awaiting dove season to kick off on labor day. The risks are real, the impacts are real and its time to understand CWD.

CWD is a fatal neurological disease of whitetail deer and its newer elk population in Virginia. CWD was first...

  • Virginia DGIF Add Two K9's This Summer

DGIFs Conservation Police Officers needed a few good dogs - and after searching far and wide they found two exceptional pups. K9 Avery, a Black Lab and K9 Waylon, a German Shorthaired Pointer. They were selected from hundreds of potential candidates for their intelligence, energy, and strong play drive.

Generous donors Mark Vannoy and the Commonwealth Criminal Justice Academy stepped forward to help purchase the dogs. Both have a passion for conservation and wanted to express their...
