  • New Lake Anna Record Hybrid Striper 3-16

Got out on the lake a bit late this morning (after 9:30) and went for the striped fish. Trolled for about an hour without a sniff. Then one of my long rods goes double and is screaming drag. I cannot turn the fish on 30 lb braid and in less than 30 seconds, it has taken around 100 yards of line. I'm thinking it is a monster blue cat..........but it's not doing the "catfish spin". I have to get the other 5 rods in before it spools me and follow it with the big motor. Finally get all the rods in and only about 20 yards of line left on the spool......the fish is about 180 yards from me and heading for a dock like a bloodhound. I start making up some line, but he made it to the dock and I cannot turn him away from it which is still at least 100 yards away. He wrapped me on the pilings in over 15 feet of water! I can still tell he is on the line and start towards the dock. At least 15 minutes have passed. Finally get over to the dock and see I'm wrapped around two different pilings. Good thing I had 30 lb braid on. After taking what seemed an eternity (probably 10 minutes), I finally worked him free and was able to net the fish.....a HUGE hybrid. About pooped my pants when I was how big and massive it was. Measured 27.5" and 10.88 lbs on my digital scale. Threw it in the cooler and headed to the marinas to get an official weight on certified scales. Certified weight was 11.00 lbs and the fellas at Sturgeon Creek Marina said it was a new lake record hybrid striper. It is now sitting in my freezer to practice my fish taxidermy on this spring/summer. I'm still shaking 4 hours later.
