  • First Time Out with the Yak

I'll start by saying that if every day I spend in the kayak is as enjoyable as yesterday, it was money well spent.

Last week the forecast was calling for an awesome day Monday, so I decided to take the day off. My wife took the day also, so
with the kids in school, we took the yaks to the river for the first time. We went to a spot on the Shenandoah that we could paddle
about a mile upstream, fishing as we went. My wife doesn't fish, and couldn't remember the last time she caught a fish, but she ended up
with three smallies and a largemouth. We didn't catch anything big, but even 12"ers are fun in a kayak. Everything we caught was on soft
    plastics and cranks.

The 80lb lab in the back of my kayak was a challenge, but she had a great time on the river too. I'm definitely looking forward to more days
like yesterday, especially when the kids can go too.

I told the Mrs. that by fall we would have Popeye arms.....

As much as the lab likes to swim, I should tie her to the front like a sled dog...lol.

Andy- you have discovered one of my favorite quick trips- My #1 spot is the Merck Park in Elkton. Put in and paddle up or down, walk it thru the rapids, then just float or fish. If you go on a weekend, you may return to the park and join a family reunion. a river baptism or a lesbian wedding- I have done all three- My # 2 spot is Skidmore- no lesbian weddings yet but it is just a beautiful place. I'm spending more days in the yak and fewer in the real boat.......

Hi Jim, Merck Park and Skidmore are on my list when the water gets a little warmer. I've never put in at Merck Park, but I did a river float field trip with my 9th grade son and we took out at there. I'm hoping to get the whole family out this weekend.
