  • Kayak Trolling Motors

    Greetings All,
Does anybody have any experience mounting/using a trolling motor on their kayak? I've just started
wondering if mounting a trolling motor would be fun and useful and ran into a lot of early questions like:
how much thrust? shaft length? brand? bow or transom? battery type, 12V or 24V, weight and balance
    considerations? etc etc.
    Any advice is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Bill

Good Article on Trolling motors for Kayaks https://kayakguru.com/best-trolling-motor-for-kayaks/

There is also Torquedo which is made specifically for the Kayaker, Wilderness systems kayaks now have specially made trolling motors, mounts for them. I have a WS Kayak but don't want the hassle of dealing with a Boat registration for my Yak and the Phoenix so I just use my paddle. Yes in Virginia if you mount a motor on your yak you have to register the boat with VDGIF.

https://kayakguru.com/best-trolling-motor-for-kayaks/ One of the guys at work referred me to this site. He uses the MK unit that's #1 in their list.

Thanks Guys. More to read. Didn't realize i had to register the yak if i put a trolling motor on it.
          Will look into that.

The registration issue dissuaded me from doing it. If I have to do that, I'll just get a nice john boat with a real outboard.
